What is a "Camper"?

Many people use the term “camper”, but “camper” is a somewhat outdated term. In the RV industry, the term campers refer to the "slide-in" kind that fit in the bed of a truck or a towable “folding” type of camper. Our customers, though, call a wide range of RVs a “camper”, and this page is designed to help educate you on the different types of RVs that are often called “campers”.

Travel Trailer Campers

Travel Trailers are campers that are towed or pulled using a trailer hitch connected to the rear bumper or frame of the towing vehicle. They range from 10 to 35 feet in length. Many travel trailers have an expandable section called a slideout. When parked and ready for use, you can “slide out” this portion of the travel trailer to increase the living space inside the camper. Larger travel trailers can sleep up to eight people comfortably. Due to the ability to easily disconnect the travel trailer from the towing vehicle, they are well suited for 2-3 week trips to multiple locations.

Fifth Wheel Campers

Fifth Wheel Campers are often considered the most luxurious of all towable RVs. Fifth Wheel campers are the largest towable camper and require the tow vehicle to be equipped with a special 5th wheel hitch. These two-level recreational vehicles can provide the greatest living of all towable RVs. Fifth-wheel travel trailers come equipped with all the comforts of home, and are perfectly adaptable for a wide range of camping trips, from weekend getaways to family vacations to full-time RVing.

Toy Hauler Campers

Toy Hauler Campers are 5th Wheels or Travel Trailers designed to be part living space, and part garage for storing things such as motorcycles and ATVs. Toy Hauler Campers have a ramp door on the back and cargo space to load motorcycles, ATVs or other "toys" inside. Just like standard Fifth Wheel Campers and Travel Trailers, Toy Haulers come in a wide range of sizes and amenities.

Folding Campers or "Pop-Ups"

Folding Camping Trailers or “Popups” Folding camping trailers (more commonly known as “Pop Ups” or “folding campers”) are smaller and weigh less than the standard “travel trailer”. The base of a pop up camper is made of sturdy, light-weight material, but the upper portion of the camper is flexible. This design allows you to “fold” the trailer into a compact shape before towing it to your destination. Once you have arrived at your destination, you can “pop up” the top to its full size. Some folding camping trailers are large enough for six people to share.

Since Pop Up Campers are the smallest of all the campers, are fairly inexpensive and can be pulled by a wide variety of vehicles, Popup campers are the quintessential “first-timer” RV to own.

Truck Campers

Truck campers, sometimes called “slide-ins” or “cab overs”, are a widely used type of camper as they are loaded into the bed of a pick-up and can be taken just about anywhere you want to go. Truck campers are a very versatile type of recreational vehicle. Due to its versatility, truck campers are a good choice for those who want to not only camp, but also pull along a boat or four wheelers.

A quality truck camper can have many of the amenities of larger RVs, but versatile enough to get in and out of many areas larger RVs dare not go. Truck campers as many as 6 people comfortably, and the versatility a removable camper provides makes it the perfect match for a wide range of people who love camping.

Why Buy A Camper?

If you're in the market for a recreational vehicle or RV – and you're trying to decide among a motorized RV, towable RV, or truck camper – here are some very practical reasons to buy a camper from Holiday World of Houston:

Camper Purchase Price

Truck campers range in price depending on the size, equipment and quality of construction. Because there's no chassis or vehicle to purchase, the initial cost is far less than a motorhome. Many truck campers have the same equipment you would find in a moderately priced motorhome.

Campers Have Lower Total Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs vary widely from state to state. However, in every case, truck camper insurance is far less than a motorized product and somewhat less than a travel trailer. With the pickup truck already insured, in most cases a rider is all that’s needed to cover the value of the camper. Because the camper is considered cargo rather than a vehicle, most states don't require an annual license for a slide-in camper. This can be a significant savings over the life of the camper.

A truck camper gets better gas mileage than a larger, heavier motorhome, and newer trucks get much better fuel economy when used for transportation without the camper. And with fuel costs skyrocketing lately, wouldn't you rather use your money for the trip instead of on fuel?

No Storage Costs for Campers vs. Motorized RVs

You can possibly find space for your camper at home. Storage for a motorhome or travel trailer could be costly, if you don't have a place to keep it at home.

Tow All Your "Toys" with a Toy Hauler Camper

Most states won't permit towing behind another trailer. So if you have a boat, trailer with personal watercraft, horse trailer, snowmobiles – or anything else you wish to tow – there's no RV better than a truck and camper to tow with. Factor in the four-wheel drive capabilities of a truck and you can go and tow places you would never dream of reaching with a motorhome.
